Union STreet Public Benches
BACKGROUND: A form of protest street art, during the summer following hurricane Sandy where the neighborhood of Gowanus experienced intensive flooding, we designed, built and installed a series of low lying benches for residents and visitors to sit upon while walking between the Gowanus and Park Slope neighborhoods.
UTILITY: Using reclaimed NYC yellow pine and powder coated steel legs, these benches will provide much needed seating for adults and children who are looking for a momentary rest near the Gowanus canal. When they were built in 2013 there were no available public benches in the area.
AMENITY: The blue paint on the legs represents the 12” of sea level rise expected over the course of the next 50 years.
