Sackett STreet Development, Brooklyn

BACKGROUND: An exposed large second story terrace on a new townhouse development in park slope called for a sense of privacy and an area where family and friends could gather for summer meals.

UTILITY: Using tropical hardwood, a cantilevered fence was designed and built with an integrated bench capable of sitting four people comfortably. The bench opens and functions as a hidden storage area.

AMENITY: Ipe is a solid tropical hardwood which lasts for decades and develops a silver patina as it ages. The fence has spot lighting underneath the cantilever creating a glowing ambience in the evenings. A tall birch tree provides additional shade from the midday sun and a planting of Japanese forest grass (hakonechloa) with horse tail (equisetum) flanks the storage bench in a series of
custom built planters.
