4th Place, Brooklyn
BACKGROUND: Located next to the Gowanus Canal, this former garage was converted into a 2 story house with structural support for an intensive green rooftop.
UTILITY: One foot of soil was loaded onto the rooftop to allow for the growth of larger native grasses and shrubs, providing a meadow habitat for invertebrate production. A new node was created for insects and pollinators to move through the street and rooftop thoroughfare rising up towards Carroll Gardens from the Gowanus Canal.
AMENITY: The rooftops acts as a native oasis, resembling a favourite hilltop stopping place which the client enjoys during hikes upstates. The highest point in the NYC subway system is visible upon the horizon just above the garden.
